Still not feeling 100% I decided I was not going to take the long and strenuous hike across the Gliederscharte. It made me a little sad but I thought about it this way: if I was hiking in a group and one of us wasn’t feeling that great we would have ammended plans and takenContinue reading “Day 15: Pfitscherjoch Haus to Pfunders – 10km”

Day 14: Hintertux to Pfitscherjoch Haus, a short day – 9km – across the watershed and into Italy!
Arranged for 2 more days of accommodation to come, had breakfast, packed up, and headed out of the valley by bus to Mayerhofen. Many, many years ago had I been here with a whole gang of people for skiing. I was 16 then, so a while ago. And has it grown ever since. Beautiful butContinue reading “Day 14: Hintertux to Pfitscherjoch Haus, a short day – 9km – across the watershed and into Italy!”
Day 12: Lizumer Hütte to Hintertux – 15km
My earliest morning so far! Woke up at 5:45, breakfast was assigned at 6:45, and departure asap. Quite a few Munich to Venice hikers wanted to get going as early as possible as it was supposed to rain, possibly starting around 11:00am and later thunderstorms as well. I left at 7:30, can you believe it!Continue reading “Day 12: Lizumer Hütte to Hintertux – 15km”
Day 11: Wattens to the Lizumer Hütte – 19km
Late again but had to stock up at the Apotheke on magnesium. I am certain coffee in Austria tastes better than in Germany and definitely better than in Canada. Maybe it’s the proximity to Italy? Although Australians claim their coffee is the best! 😊 The breakfasts are amazing in most places too and this oneContinue reading “Day 11: Wattens to the Lizumer Hütte – 19km”
Day 10: Wattens – a recovery day and Svarovski Kristallwelten (6km)
Slept in, had a fabulous breakfast and then spent more than 2 hours figuring out how to get from the Lizumer Hütte to Hintertux in 2 days as well as coming up with a general plan for the next week. I might steer into the direction of Bozen or Bolzano in Italian to see aContinue reading “Day 10: Wattens – a recovery day and Svarovski Kristallwelten (6km)”
Day 9: Hallerangerhaus to Wattens – 24km and 1700m down!
Had a lovely cafe macchiato for breakfast and actually managed to leave at 8:30. Must have been my earliest morning! Working on it! Just when I wanted to leave it started drizzling again. So everybody got their rain gear out again. Very steep climb up to the Lafatscherjoch (2081m). Quite foggy on the way upContinue reading “Day 9: Hallerangerhaus to Wattens – 24km and 1700m down!”
Day 8: Scharnitz to Hallerangerhaus – 13.5km
Decided to take it a little easier today and the innkeeper of the Risser Hof arranged for a shuttle to take me up into the Hinterautal to the Lanier Alm. This saved me about 15km. In retrospect I should have taken the train much earlier yesterday and walked the whole valley today because it wasContinue reading “Day 8: Scharnitz to Hallerangerhaus – 13.5km”
Day 7: Vorderriß to Scharnitz, Austria – 24km
I had played with the idea of taking a route over the Falkenhuette to Scharnitz but it looked like a rainy day and I decided to take a toll road out of the valley heading west to Wallgau, Mittenwald, and then Scharnitz. I should have followed the cycling/hiking path which would have spared me aboutContinue reading “Day 7: Vorderriß to Scharnitz, Austria – 24km”
Day 6: Tutzinger Hütte to Vorderriß – 14km
I decided yesterday that I will create my own tour. I want to be able to enjoy the experience too not just accomplish an athletic challenge. I want to be able to sit by a creek for half an hour if I feel like it. I will have to take the bus once in aContinue reading “Day 6: Tutzinger Hütte to Vorderriß – 14km”
Day 5: Bad Tölz to Tutzinger Hütte – 25km
It’s been a while since I had a chance to post anything. No reception, no wifi, an empty phone battery, and a blocked SIM card but here we go. Woke up at 4:30 and it was pouring rain. Just grateful I wasn’t hiking! Went back to sleep until just after 6:00 and decided to getContinue reading “Day 5: Bad Tölz to Tutzinger Hütte – 25km”
