Day 6: Tutzinger Hütte to Vorderriß – 14km

I decided yesterday that I will create my own tour. I want to be able to enjoy the experience too not just accomplish an athletic challenge. I want to be able to sit by a creek for half an hour if I feel like it. I will have to take the bus once in a while anyways as I can’t get accommodation on all the Hütten as they only have limited capacity.

That had been freaking me out for 2 weeks now. And I noticed with a lot of up and down 14-16 km is ok for me. I don’t want to walk 25-34 km every day. For me that will take out the joy of the experience. Still having to deal with blisters and the heavy pack!

The same topic came up with my roommate later tonight. Isabel is much younger than myself, very fit, does hiking a lot, and she said she has a hard time with the timings and has to push herself to get there. Basically no time for stops. Maybe if you were just walking without a backpack that would be different. I also noticed that the uphill is not my problem but the downhill really slows me down.

After a steep uphill around the Benediktenwand I had a short break to enjoy the view, endless chains of mountains to the south. That’s where I am headed!

Anyhow, the day started beautifully! I managed to charge my phone during breakfast for a donation, packed up and actually headed out at 9:00. The sun was hot already.

A steep long downhill followed through the forest, nicely shaded. I decided to walk on the forest road as the steep downhill was hard on my feet. Might have been a wrong decision as it was steep, hot in the sun, and a detour for a long time. Had a rest on a pile of logs and many butterflies came to lick the salt off me, from my socks, my backpack, my hands,….

Then I reached Jachenau and I decided I was going to look for a bus to take me out of The Valley and into the next valley as I was running late again. My SIM card was still locked because I had turned off the phone last night, and I didn’t have the PIN yet. So I went into the Jachenauer Hof to find out more. They weren’t sure. I asked them if I could use their phone. When I came in the second time the waitress asked if I needed help and offered me to take me back to Lenggries. That was wonderful and it allowed me to catch an earlier bus and have a shower, have dinner in the beergarden and relax a bit. Her son just finished his carpentry apprenticeship and wants to go to Canada for 6 months, to start in Vancouver but of course Corona makes it difficult for him.

The bus took me along the Sylvensteinspeicher, a damned valley. A little village Fall was submerged there and when the water levels are low you can still see the peak of the church sticking out. Lots of paddle borders there and the bus took in more exhausted hikers with small backpacks.

The Gasthaus Post in Vorderriß is a beautiful old inn, the dinner was good and the breakfast amazing. I had a lovely roommate and in a bunk room where normally 10 people could overnight there are currently only 2 allowed due to Corona if they are single travellers. This is of course nice but also explains the shortage of spaces for many of the upcoming Hütten,

A young couple had dinner next to me. They were exhausted and sore too, backpacking. Their little dog slept the whole time while they were having dinner.

Seems to be a common issue! 🤪

  1. Oh Sibylle, du bist die Beste. Es ist sooo schön, dass du uns teilhaben lässt. Danke du Liebe. ❤️

  2. Take your time and don’t fret if you need to take a few busses. It about the experance not the walking. Please post some photos with you in them. Stay safe!
