The season of fog – Elk Lake Walk, a story in black and white
Last weekend we had a lot of dense fog again. After quite a bit of snow and icy surfaces it was a real pleasure walking. There were no giant puddles to cross and most of the melt water and rain was gone so the path around Elk and Beaver Lake was quite pleasant. Lots ofContinue reading “The season of fog – Elk Lake Walk, a story in black and white”
Day 28: Rifugio Sommariva to Forno di Zoldo – 8km
All morning it was pouring rain! It was supposed to get a little better around noon. There were 3 girls heading out into the valley around 8:30 while it was just terrible and our roommate Svenja took on the big, long, challenge over a difficult “Joch” around 8:00. The only hikers left at the RifugioContinue reading “Day 28: Rifugio Sommariva to Forno di Zoldo – 8km”
Day 27: Rifugio Carestiato to Rifugio Sommariva al Pramperet – 14km
Today was supposed to be a rainy day. Big surprise in the morning when there was sun and some blue skies visible. Still the afternoon was going to be wet and thunderstorms would be very likely. I managed to leave at 8:00am and later I was so glad I did! The first 2km went alongContinue reading “Day 27: Rifugio Carestiato to Rifugio Sommariva al Pramperet – 14km”
Day 26: Rifugio Vazzoler to Rifugio Carestiato – 11km
Left at 8:30am with another beautiful day ahead, about 4.5 hours if I didn’t stop which of course is not going to happen! And today I decided I was going to write as I go. That might make it less of a chore at the end of the day and more in the moment. BecauseContinue reading “Day 26: Rifugio Vazzoler to Rifugio Carestiato – 11km”
Day 24: Alleghe to Rifugio Tissi – 10km
Left after confirming my next 4 accommodations. Finally made a decidion to stay in the mountains as long as I can and possibly skip Belluno. Left Alleghe and discovered more devastating images of the rock- and mudslides that had happened in October 2018. This explained the area I had been hiking through yesterday and theContinue reading “Day 24: Alleghe to Rifugio Tissi – 10km”
Day 21: La Villa – again! Another bad weather day which turned out to be quite pleasant – 15km
Was trying to make my departure work all morning. Was up super early, packed and ready to go but the perspective of quite a bit of rain wasn’t really exciting. On top of that today’s route would have taken me from Passo Pordoi to the Marmolada, one of the most scenic parts of my hike,Continue reading “Day 21: La Villa – again! Day 12: Lizumer Hütte to Hintertux – 15km
My earliest morning so far! Woke up at 5:45, breakfast was assigned at 6:45, and departure asap. Quite a few Munich to Venice hikers wanted to get going as early as possible as it was supposed to rain, possibly starting around 11:00am and later thunderstorms as well. I left at 7:30, can you believe it!Continue reading “Day 12: Lizumer Hütte to Hintertux – 15km”
Day 9: Hallerangerhaus to Wattens – 24km and 1700m down!
Had a lovely cafe macchiato for breakfast and actually managed to leave at 8:30. Must have been my earliest morning! Working on it! Just when I wanted to leave it started drizzling again. So everybody got their rain gear out again. Very steep climb up to the Lafatscherjoch (2081m). Quite foggy on the way upContinue reading “Day 9: Hallerangerhaus to Wattens – 24km and 1700m down!”
Hiking – a way of getting connected!
Hiking has always been something I liked to do. Often more like walking, especially walking the dogs, but this year it has become more intense, a different importance, a different level. Through all these early months of 2020 (the year of Covid 19 when the world came to a stop), a lot of us allContinue reading “Hiking – a way of getting connected!”
