Day 12: Lizumer Hütte to Hintertux – 15km

My earliest morning so far! Woke up at 5:45, breakfast was assigned at 6:45, and departure asap. Quite a few Munich to Venice hikers wanted to get going as early as possible as it was supposed to rain, possibly starting around 11:00am and later thunderstorms as well.

I left at 7:30, can you believe it! It was a beautiful morning, no hikers headed my way at all. I had booked accommodation in Hintertux as the Tuxer-Joch Haus was completely booked. I chose the shorter route, only about 5 hours across the Tor Joch into Lanersbach as I didn’t know when the rain would start. Took the bus from Lanersbach to Hintertux and made it to my overnight place the minute the thunderstorm started!

I got to see 2 more things that were on my “list” today: marmots and an eagle, now there is only the Edelweiss left! They usually grow at 2000m +. There was a small memorial on my way up for a young woman, Anna Perktold who had been picking Edelweiß in July 1941 and had fallen to her death.

I left even before the cows were heading out!

Lizum actually means “dirty place” and it certainly was true for me as you will see.

I kind of missed the path climbing up the first steep part and didn’t notice at that point that I was headed into cow territory. All of a sudden 4 of them seemed really interested in me and were headed straight for me. They were probably wondering what I was going to do as I went right to their central meeting point, a big rock and behind some kind of shelter, maybe water? Anyhow, I did not have the nerve to take pictures then but I tried seeking shelter behind the big rock. And was it ever wet, swampy, provably filled with cow ….. my feet could hardly get out, especially the right shoe looked horrific!

Then I climbed up further and I saw more marmots! I was so happy, love those furry guys. I sat in the middle of an alpine gully and there was absolutely no sound! And then the whistling started all through the valley. Not sure if you can see it in the video but at the top right a fox is running down the ridge. The marmots make the whistling sounds to warn each other.

The clouds started to move in and when I got to the Tor Seen (lakes) it happened to my left shoe. Very mushy ground and a lot of cow …..

Tried cleaning it in a creek, then descended into the valley, crossing a waterfall, passing another dairy farm.

Lots and lots of cows right by the path, they are so beautiful!

And more wildflowers!

And further down into the valley. Took the bus, walked into the B&B, and a thunderstorm with lightning, hail, and a tremendous downpour happened!

So glad to be inside, once again right under the roof!
