Day 28: Rifugio Sommariva to Forno di Zoldo – 8km

All morning it was pouring rain! It was supposed to get a little better around noon. There were 3 girls heading out into the valley around 8:30 while it was just terrible and our roommate Svenja took on the big, long, challenge over a difficult “Joch” around 8:00. The only hikers left at the Rifugio was Monique, Charly, and myself. And we waited and waited, and talked and talked,….

Just after 11:00 we decided the weather looked a bit better and headed out in full rain gear with most our clothes semi dried from last night.

It still rained off and on but it was definitely tolerable. In fact it was a beautiful downhill hike through different kinds of forest, in the mist all morning and filled with conversations about music, traditions, customs, life, history, food, gelato, nature, and all of it supported by 3 if not 4 languages: English, Italian, German, and Spanish. The first and last time on my hike I had company and it was a delight.

Descending into the valley through beautiful forests passing the Malga Pramper, an agri tourism operation making cheese and offering accommodation and food. And there they were again – the cows!

Getting down lower and lower until we reached another hiking parking lot.

We were offered a ride into Forno di Zoldo but almost everything was closed as it was a Monday. Stopped for a late sandwich at a real traditional super cozy place “Mezzo Canale da Ninetta” with a traditional fire place that in the past would have been used for cooking and heating the whole house.

Then Charly dropped us off at the B&B Casa Gilda. Finally a dry place to relax, do laundry, dry our stuff, feel pampered. Went to an Albergo for dinner close by with Monique and we were blissfully happy.
