Day 32: Venice, Murano and Burano – 11km

Headed out to the train station and got myself a day pass for the public transit, which is boats! No cars, no trains (although it looks like a commuter train map). There are in fact no cars in Venice, just a few that will take you across the dam to the mainland. And there is boats for freight, speed boats, pleasure boats, gondolas, taxi boats, sightseeing boats, police boats, ….. you get the idea! Very busy waterways and no one is wearing life vests. I guess the water is a lot warmer than in Canada and if you can swim you have a pretty good chance of survival.

Took the ACTV to Murano, the famous island of glass artists. I was also there during the Venice Glass Week from the 5th to the 13th of September which opened all the artist studios on Murano Island for demonstrations.

Visited several of the artist studios and saw so many different styles: from the classic glass chandeliers to classic styles, modern art, tons of massive animal glass sculptures, modern pieces, “look into the aquarium” scenes, jewellery, glassware,…. lots of places don’t want you to take pictures, so this is all I got!

Had lunch at a cozy little place by the canal in the shade. My first set of “Spaghetti alla Vongole”. Sat next to Helga from Austria and we chatted like old friends. Turned out we were staying at the same hotel in Venice. What are the chances of that?

Decided last minute to go to Burano, the island famous for lace. A 45 minute boat ride one way. Felt good about getting a lot of use from my day pass (Euro 20) but had to sacrifice my glass of Prosecco on the rooftop of the Danieli Hotel!🤭 So I need to be back!!! But I did have a Prosecco or two, after all the area North of Venice is where it comes from – the Veneto region, a large area spanning nine provinces in the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions.

Burano is very colourful. The architecture looks different but the colours of the houses could be in Newfoundland.

Found a replacement ring as the ring I bought in Murano fell apart within 2 hours!?!

Would have loved to stay for dinner but felt I had to get back to Venice as it was my last night. Was going to check out the recommended Osteria next to the hotel.

Instead of waiting and taking another boat I decided to walk from Fondamente Nove to Santa Lucia. Of course with a lot of dead ends and detours. Passing all these beautiful dinner places, lots of them small, the ultimate romantic settings, lots of bars where people hang out in the alleys with their drinks, music, and everyone out at night to socialize, again: kids, dogs, families, ……

Passed the Rialto Bridge again, more restaurants, and the sun going down.

When I finally made it to my tapas bar I found out the kitchen closed at 8:00pm and it was 8:15. Drinks only. Had to have food though and headed out again. Found an ok but a bit pricey place and had “Spaghetti alla Vongole” a second time today. Both were delicious!
