Day 29: Longarone – 4.5km, debriefing and a chill day!

Was going to stay for only one night but it turned out I had logistics/travel issues and badly needed a day off. So I stayed in Longarone for another day.

Spent lots of time on the phone or with the phone planning my next moves while having purrrrfect company all morning!

Took a walk into town to find out how to best get to Venice tomorrow. The girl in the visitor centre didn’t know much about it and suggested the train (multiple trains that would be) so I went to the train station. The lady at the bar didn’t speak English and there were 5 different time tables taped to the door that were all outdated, some by 3 days and some by 3 years. So I think I should be able to leave by bus around 10:30 tomorrow. We’ll see!

Longarone had a terrible flood, a megatsunami in 1963 at 22:42 on October 9th. This was caused by a landslide off Mt. Tok in which 50 million cubic metres of water overtopped the dam in a wave of 250 metres (820 ft) leading to the complete destruction of several villages and towns in the Piave valley and killing approximately 2000 people. There had been many warning signs ahead of time, mudslides, earth quakes, the whole side of the mountain dropping 22cm, trees falling but nothing was done about it but lowering the water levels a bit. Today the dam still exists but the basin behind is dry.

A new very modern church was built at the site of the old one. It resembles a giant wave. There is a small museum holding recovered pieces of the old church.

Had a nice Italian gelato and later we went back to our favourite Albergo for dinner.
