Day 1 of the Fire Morel Adventure – Victoria to Prince George

First I had to get off the island, that is Vancouver Island! Originally the plan was to drive up to Williams Lake and then head West to the Chilcotin to go morel hunting. And then last minute I decided to fly to Prince George and go from there.

Spent a while at the beautiful Victoria Airport YYJ, always relaxing to fly from here, no huge line-ups, the new extension full of light and comfy seats, charging stations at every seat, Spinnakers On the Fly with nice coffees, food, and drinks, and if you’re lucky Victoria Distillers (Thursday to Monday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm), Canada’s first active distillery at an airport is open with it’s stunning purple Empress 1908 Gin. Watch your own bottle being dispensed and labelled.

Boarded a Westjet flight to Vancouver and then onto to Prince George. Leaving Victoria I could see my gardening plot at Sandown, and the Canoe Cove Marina, a ship cutting through the silt from the Rocky Mountains far away, carried by the Fraser River over 1375 km to the ocean, and then of course the Fraser below as we approached the airport in Vancouver.

Had a bit of time in Vancouver so I had dinner at Stanley Park Taphouse. It was absolutely delicious. Had a nice refreshing pale ale and beautiful fried cauliflower with a view of the planes moving back and forth. I love planes!

Then a gorgeous sunset and spectacular clouds and more sunsets, crossing the coast mountains.

You know you are in bear country when you arrive in Prince George! Late arrival and a short night as tomorrow we were going to head to the Chilko River Lodge!
