Day 25: Rifugio Tissi to Rifugio Vazzoler – 10km

In the morning I couldn’t get out of my uncomfortable bed (too hard and finally warm) so I missed breakfast, until 8:00am! As I didn’t have far to go I had lots of time. Had a cappuccino and went up to the peak and spent some time there before I headed out around 9:30am.

Today was a relaxing day with little distance to cover but really lots of time to play and enjoy the day!

And that’s what I did. I took a lot of time and still arrived at 1:00pm.

Amazing scenery everywhere.

Also found a nice spot to brush my teeth, yeah! Like wilderness camping.

More memorials of mountain climbers.

I had descended in the morning and heard someone whistling and shouting, also had spotted him. Now I saw him and his dog again. They had been looking for a missing sheep. He had found it but the poor sheep had a broken leg. The sheppard was encouraging the sheep to make it downhill slowly to the pass. This is how much I understood of what he was telling me in Italian.

Further down I saw the rest of the herd with one of those lifestock dogs right in the middle, barking at me. The colour perfectly matched with the rest of the sheep.

And then a creek. Due to the water shortage at the Tissi I couldn’t fill my waterbottles. Years of training in filling up water bottles for my guests with glacial melt water at the Athabasca Glacier made me find the perfect spot immediately.

Hiking through fields of glacier erratics, then around Torre Venetia, through rockslides, down a steep road to the Rifugio Vazzoler.

Super friendly hosts, English and German no problem. Rustic accommodation, my room is a tiny double bunk room but mine and the mattress feels a lot more comfy. Bad phone reception, so very peaceful. I have a feeling this could be like this for the next 3 days. Even managed to have a shower!

Made friends with the dog of the house.

Dinner!!!! I am starving!

So grateful for a room and a comfier bed, didn’t mind being next to the washrooms or hearing people talk and laugh downstairs. Feeling like a child with this background noise. 🥰

This was a lovely place, great outdoor seating, awesome food all cooked on a giant modern wood stove, extremely friendly hosts. This is their first year taking over from some not so good reputation and they are doing terrific. Would come back any time!

  1. wow love all the photos .fantastic to see that you had a relaxing day wish I could be there to enjoy all the scenery with you. take care safe travels

  2. It sounds like a much better place to stay than last night was…aside from never being able to do the hike I would not like some of those accommodations much. My idea of roughing it is the Sandman on Georgia! Beautiful though…
