Day 3 and 4: Geretsried to Bad Tölz – 18km

Didn’t sleep well last night although my body was exhausted. Walking into town for dinner was just a bit much for my feet!

Had too much going on in my head. After I leave the Lizumer Hütte on day 9 I have no reservations and my 2 options were completely booked when I checked last week. It would be so much more in the flow if you could just decide as you go along. Due to Corona you have to have a reservation the latest the night before. That of course is leaving it to the last minute. The Zillertaler Alps seem to be very popular, maybe even more so as people might stay closer to home.

Also, is my sleeping bag going to be warm enough as the windows have to be open at night, for better airflow due to Corona?

And then there is a big chance of thunderstorms for today, starting late morning!!!!

Heading through town to get back to the Isar. Today is going to be more remote, not even a place for lunch or to get food. So glad to leave this town behind, very populated, lots of industrial areas, and last nights’ accommodation was very far from the Isar. So glad when I finally reached the forest!

Had my first break/breakfast at the Malerwinkel, a very popular place for painters. An energy bar, some nuts and a green tea/mineral powder.

From here took a small path, very steep descent through the forest and a beautiful path through forest and meadows. Saw my first deer in an open meadow surrounded by forests, popular hunting grounds.

Very remote area for another 5km. My left foot really started bothering me. Had to sit down in the middle of the path to put a blister bandaid on. The hiker I met the day before passed me light footed and obviously headed for the same destination. Followed the Isar for a long time in a deep gravel path, hard to walk,

The last stretch ended up with a detour, a lost path through another very steep beech forest and another deer and a snake (Ringelnatter).

Almost didn’t make the last 5km as my feet hurt so much. Ended up with a massive blister on my left foot and another one on the right. This is when I decided I needed a rest day for my feet.

Just when I got into town it started raining a bit

Dinner sounds! 😊

Because my feet had a blister each and the left one was do painful I figured I needed a rest day to recover them. Also discarded a lot of stuff, less weight! Luckily I didn’t have to send it back to Munich as my parents offered to go for a little excursion and pick it up. So interesting when after a few days you realize you can do with even less!!!!

Spent hours rebooking, changing my route and accommodations today. Lots has no availability or only for more than 1 night. It is very stressful. Finally feeling this is „my“ adventure and not an athletic competition „who gets there the fastest!“. Very stressful trying to plan the route. Due to more people in the alps because of Corona? Will be interesting if this gets any easier in Italy!

Finally headed to the Tutzinger Hütte tomorrow. Might have to take it easy because of my feet!

  1. Oh Sibylle! So sorry your feet are blistered. Take a couple of days to recover…you need it. Thinking about you often.

    1. Sibylle, if you have anti-perspirant with you, rub it between your toes and anywhere you have blisters. It discourages sweating which promotes blisters. It has saved my feet so many times. Wish I could have joined you.

  2. Hi Sybill
Great to have your commentary and see the pictures as you go it looks beautiful. Its a shame that the accommodation is making things more difficult for you sometimes there may be something we are meant to learn or see in that challenge or just make us more adaptable or fine tune problem solving skills& more time to smell the roses. Hope your feet recover very quickly there is no easy fix, I feel your pain. Take care.
