My little patio garden – in April

Meanwhile I am thrilled to watch my tiny patio garden come to life and marvel at all the overwintering plants and perennials, new growth, and my lovely little lizards that are happily sun tanning.

Today I even observed one hunting! They eat ground and flying insects, several kinds of spiders, also berries and they will even jump and catch their prey in the air!

The ones I have on my patio are European wall lizards which were introduced to the Saanich Peninsula after a private zoo closed in the 1970s. They are very well established and use the same habitat as our native alligator lizard which could mean lots of competition, they have been seen suntanning together on the same rocks.

Flowering kale, soon going to be followed by the carrots, first little leaves of my echinacea plant, new growth on my clematis, lavender blossoms, the deep green leaves of my Italian parsley, and the overwintering calendulas.

It‘s such a pleasure to observe how quickly everything changes and grows. It really changes on a daily basis.

So excited for my sweet peas which I planted in my big containers. Always wanted to have sweet peas as their colour and fragrance is so incredible. On top of that they are pollinator plants which means they attract butterflies, bees, other insects, and even hummingbirds.
