I had played with the idea of taking a route over the Falkenhuette to Scharnitz but it looked like a rainy day and I decided to take a toll road out of the valley heading west to Wallgau, Mittenwald, and then Scharnitz.
I should have followed the cycling/hiking path which would have spared me about 12km of traffic (not terrible but also not relaxing) and walking on an asphalt road. In the end another detour. It was raining for almost 2 hours early on and I got to test my rain cover and raincoat. My pants were soaked but dried off quickly again.
I finally reached a hiking path taking me into Wallgau and from there continued to Mittenwald where my grandparents had been going for holidays for many many years in a row. It felt kind of like stepping in their footsteps. Walking along the Isar again all day with a really pretty stretch here
When I got close to Mittenwald I turned off the cycling path in my “no more cycling routes” paranoia and passed a little farm and then lost at least half an hour getting back on track. I had checked the satellite image and thought if I managed to cross over to the right I should be able to get out of my dead end which was an overgrown driveway with thistles, brambles, fenced in by an electric fence from the little farm.
Little did I realize that the road above belonged to the Edelweiß Kaserne a major military base as Mittenwald is very close to the border to Austria. So in the end I crawled under the electric fence, luckily found a spot where deer had trampled down a deer fence and a second one and made it to a major road where I walked along for about 500m until I reached another trampled down deer fence and made it back to the “cycling path”!!! All of that in the rain again.
Walked along the Isar through town with the massive Karwendel Range to the East.
Finally made it to the train station and took the train to Scharnitz which is right after the border in Austria. A 7 minute ride and because the conductor was busy with another traveller I got to take the train for free!
Wobbled to the Risserhof with my last remaining strength. Mostly walking on asphalt on a long day like today is really hard on your feet.
