Had to share some more of those beauties with you. All these I found/saw after my Munich to Venice hike (which had been blessed with many beautiful specimens all along) while in Germany.
Many of them edible and excellent tasting, some are highly medicinal supporting our body’s immune system and curing diseases, some very interesting ones, colourful, some are poisonous, even deadly, and always fascinating!
It has been an incredible mushroom year wherever I went this year. Hiking in late August in Italy was tremendous too. All these mushrooms I couldn’t pick but at least take some pictures of!
Coming back to Germany king boletes and parasol mushrooms galore.
Hearing from my mushroom club SVIMS and friends in Canada mushrooms were absolutely everywhere as well!
My welcome gift at the side of the road was a picture perfect king bolete too. Just standing there to hop in the car with me.
And I even got my hands on giant puff balls – thank you David!
Now we are still in for a some more pine mushroom and chanterelles, slippery jacks and fat jacks, parasols mushrooms as it is starting to get colder. With the incoming rains on Vancouver Island though we are nearing the end of the mushroom season for this year.
I belong to a mushroom club, SVIMS or South Vancouver Island Mycological Society, unfortunately we have not been able to meet in person this year. However there are many virtual events and if you want to learn more about mushrooms, edible or not, I can highly recommend joining a mushroom club. You’ll find like minded people, experts, scientific researchers, great connections, and of course you will learn a lot about mushrooms!
Another great website to get you excited about mushrooms is “Fantastic Fungi”. A wonderful documentary by Louis Schwarzberg is well worthwhile seeing. If you’ve missed it in the movie theatres you can still buy or rent it here: “Fantastic Fungi – The Magic beneath us” .
And if you are lucky enough to get your hands on the last of the wild mushrooms either by finding them yourself (if you know what you are looking for) or at your local market stay posted for my next blog where I am going to share my favourite mushroom recipe with you.
Italian Mushroom Risotto – with an easy vegan option!
DISCLAIMER: The mushrooms depicted in this blog are not all edible. They showcase just the beauty and variety of mushrooms. Do not pick just any mushrooms and eat them! It might be your last meal!
